This paper details the evolution of the mixed-methods implementation study component of the i3 evaluation of Reading Recovery. The design of the study has evolved in response to emerging understandings about the opportunities afforded by the mixed-methods design. In Year One, the research team utilized a Convergence Triangulation design (Creswell, Plano Clark, Gutmann, & Hanson, 2003) to build a comprehensive general understanding of the players, structures, and processes involved with implementation. In Years Two and Three, the focus of the study shifted to identifying and exploring the features of implementation that pertain program quality and, we hypothesize, impacts. We therefore adopted an approach reflected in Creswell et al.’s (2003) Exploratory Instrument Development design. The implications for sampling are also discussed.
