The adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) in various states has created a need for teacher education initiatives adapted to the new standards for preservice and inservice teachers. Among the important areas for such teacher education is the topic of Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs). Within this study, we present analysis of various mathematics teacher educators’ ratings and descriptions of SMPs and tasks proposed to assess them. Results indicate that while most mathematics teacher educators rate CCSSM descriptions of SMPs as relatively clear, there is little agreement for when certain SMPs are assessed by particular mathematical tasks. Yet, other SMPS are perceived present in every task. Implications of these and other results are discussed.
