Student Teaching Performance: A Growth Model

Fri, April 17, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

Student teaching is an opportunity for preservice teachers to enact their learning in functioning classrooms through the guidance of a cooperating teacher. This experience requires active participation rather than merely relegate the student teacher to classroom aid or observer. It has been suggest that some placements are made from convenience and cooperating teachers are not always willing or have the capacity to fulfill a mentorship role.
Our goal is to study changes in preservice teachers during student teaching in order to understand some of the factors that differentiate between successful preservice teachers. Thus, the following research questions were explored: Are there differences within and between student teachers at the baseline and growth rate? What variables contribute to explain such differences?
