Engendering Justice: Developing Curricula Around Gender, Orientation, and Bullying for Elementary-Aged Children

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This curriculum project partners Social Foundations of Education courses at a mid-sized southern university and the YES Institute of Miami, Florida, whose mission is to prevent bullying centered on issues of gender and orientation. The Yes Institute’s current curricula are utilized by the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, but they target 5th grade and older, and they have seen a need for curriculum for younger children. Thus, this project involves education majors in researching and developing curriculum to address issues surrounding gender and gender identity from the ages of four to 11, and, in the process, assesses these future educators’ comfort levels and willingness to create environments for their students where learning and discourse surrounding gender could occur.
