Headship Transitions in International Schools: A Clarification of Model Parameters

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, San Francisco

Abstract

The dearth of formal knowledge concerning leadership and governance in international schools remains problematic as approximately seventy percent of international school heads either resign or are removed prior to fulfilling their initial contracts. More complete conceptualizations of the international school headship role and transition process may inform the practice of individuals tasked with ensuring that hired heads successfully adjust to work and life abroad. The purpose of this embedded multi-site case study will be to further clarify, edit, and hone a model of the headship transition process through semi-structured interviews with international school heads serving in their second years. Findings from this study will help inform future research, practice, and policy regarding international school leadership and governance.
