Factors Affecting LGBQ College Choice Decisions

Thu, April 16, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal B

Abstract

College choice literature has explored the process of how students aspire, decide and enroll in graduation education. In recent years, contextual factors such as family, socioeconomic status, high school contexts and college finances have been explored. The processes is further complicated for marginalized groups. Utilizing Hossler and Gallagher (1987) three-stage model of college choice, we explore the predisposition, search and college choice processes for 16 lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer (LGBQ students). Implications for students, institutions and policymakers are discussed.
