Geospatial Patterns in High School Algebra I and Advanced Mathematics Courses

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

In keeping with the conference theme of advancing justice, this research examines which high school districts across Missouri offer opportunities for advanced coursework in mathematics beyond Algebra I. Using geospatial analysis to account for autocorrelation in spatially clustered data, the findings suggest that some districts in St. Louis and Kansas City metro areas with higher percentages of FRL and minority students have fewer advanced mathematics course offerings. Some rural districts spend more per student annually but offer few advanced courses. These factors limit opportunities to take advanced courses that provide the foundation for college and potential STEM careers. Districts with higher enrollment tend to offer more advanced courses and are most likely located in and around metro areas.
