Research seeks input from families, teachers, and caregiver concerning the quality of life of individuals with intellectual disability (ID), ignoring input from the individual him/herself. As we seek to provide services for individuals with ID we must first seek input from the individuals themselves and “… listen to the people with whom we profess to be working” (Flynn, 1989; Folkestad, 2000). Utilizing photo essays can generate new knowledge about the lives of adults with ID thus providing an important lens for families, teachers, and agencies to understand.
