This cognitive interview study aims to improve content validity of a newly developed reading motivation instrument for English language learners. Previous research has shown there is a significant need for survey developers to conduct cognitive interviews to ensure that survey respondents interpret the items according to what was the original intention. The present study highlights three main patterns of student misinterpretation that merit further revision of the survey items in order to improve the content and item validity: 1) lexical, 2) situational, and 3) cultural.
