This paper explores how reader identities emerged in whole group discussions of read aloud texts for fifth grade readers identified as “struggling.” Drawing on discourse analytic methods for analyzing transcripts of classroom interactions, analysis demonstrates how students publicly performed reading competence or actively opted out. This paper offers implications for researchers, teacher educators, and in-service teachers who seek to work toward more just educational opportunities for students pushed to the margins of the educational “norm.”
