Abstract

Since 2001, the number of children attending school in Afghanistan has increased from 1-million to nearly 6-million. Some 82 percent of boys and 63 percent of girls now reach the sixth grade. Unfortunately, these figures drop precipitously beyond elementary school and higher education remains elusive goal for most. I have worked extensively in Afghanistan on a project to enhance higher education, and traveled in the country for extended periods of time. I have conducted extensive interviews with the key individuals responsible for higher education development in the country. My research and the proposed presentation analyzes data from these interviews using grounded theory to better understand the development of higher education in Afghanistan.
