An Exploration of Black Student College-Going to the For-Profit Higher Education Sector

Abstract

Black students are the highest enrolled racial group in for-profit higher education. Although only one in 20 students who enroll in degree granting institutions attend for-profit colleges, attendance is one in 10 for Black students. The purpose of this study is to explore Black student participation in for-profit colleges through a cultural ecological framework in order to examine the personal, social, educational, and environmental factors that might explain the college-going nature. The author argues that employing an ecological framework allows for a more nuanced and rigorous understanding of the multiple roots and routes that inform college choice considerations of Black students to the for-profit sector.
