Arts Integration Improves Student Achievement

Abstract

The purpose of this research paper is to evaluate an arts integration program in Rochester, NY. The Rochester Arts Impact Study Enhancement (RAISE) is a true experimental design and involves 16,630 K-6 public school students over four years. In the third year, 2013, kindergartener’s treatment schools gained four to five months of additional developmental growth; grades 1 and 2 treatment schools were significantly ahead of control groups; and in grades 3-6, the treatment schools who passed [met or exceeded] New York State standards on Common Core tests outscored the control schools by 41.4% in ELA and 38.0% in Math. These significant findings can be attributed to the RAISE MODEL of capacity building elaborated residencies that produced high quality arts integration.
