Traditions, Culture, and Recruiting Black Male Teachers: Exploring the Life History of a Middle School Teacher

Fri, April 17, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fifth Level, Los Angeles/Miami

Abstract

Recruiting and retaining Black male middle school teachers provides a great foundation for inclusion in equity in teacher education. Lynn (2006), presents a central question relevant to this study: To what extent do Black male teachers, who express a commitment to serving African American youth, embody the characteristics of culturally relevant women teachers?
The purpose of this paper is to provide an epistemological framing that allows a critical examination of the life history of a Black male middle school teacher and the ways in which his historical societal, institutional, communal and personal experiences have shaped him to become a teacher and advocate for Black male students.
