The purpose of our study was to look at the trajectories of engagement (cognitive, behavioral, emotional and social) over the duration of one Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). Results indicated varying levels of engagement with social engagement being the lowest. The latent curve analysis showed that cognitive and social engagement had positively increasing linear curves over time, whereas emotional and behavioral engagement showed a positively increasing quadratic curve. Our results indicate that there exists a significant variance within each of the engagement components over time meaning that engagement differs from student to student. Our results reveal that it is important to considered different facets of engagement within the MOOC environment.
