Critical Global Citizenship in Research and Praxis: Possibilities and Constraints in the U.N. Post-2015 Education Targets

Fri, April 17, 8:15 to 10:15am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, St. Gallen 3

Abstract

The field of global citizenship education (GCE) is at a key juncture. There is growing attention to and confusion around educating for global citizenship (GCE). UNESCO is advancing the inclusion of global citizenship and sustainability skills as one of the seven post-2015 targets for education progress. A growing body of research calls for a critical approach to GCE that recognizes the concept itself is embedded in the very system of power relations that it seeks to change. This paper presents a critical discourse analysis of recent UN publications outlining the inclusion of global citizenship in order to map the wider ideological context on which the discourses of GCE draw, and to recognize the possibilities and foreclosures for critical approaches.
