Longitudinal Impact of Out-of-School Enrichment on Low-Socioeconomic-Status High-Ability Students

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 10:15am, Sheraton, Floor: Second Level, Missouri

Abstract

Not all learning takes place in the classroom during the school day. Formal and informal educational opportunities abound in many communities around the country. Unfortunately, low-income and culturally diverse students face barriers that frequently result in their exclusion from these extra-curricular, out-of-school programs. This study examines one program that offers high-quality out of school enrichment to low-income students and provides evidence that attendance in the program affects achievement for low-income, high ability students compared to similar students who did not attend. Multi-level modeling was utilized to examine achievement growth over time of mathematics scores on a state standardized test. Results showed that low income students who participated in the program achieved statistically significant growth on their scores in mathematics.
