Comprehensive Internationalization at Home: Exploring Student Perceptions of Global Competence

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

This paper explores findings from the Global Competence Enrichment Program (GCEP), an innovative pilot program designed both to enhance the global competence of participating international and U.S. students and to support efforts to build comprehensive internationalization of the university. Drawing on qualitative data collected from interviews and focus groups, the paper will focus on the following dimensions: (1) how participating students understood and defined the concept of global competence, (2) students’ perceptions of the internationalization of higher education, and (3) the degree to which participating students believed that the GCEP contributed to the internationalization of their university and building of their own global competence.
