Presenting Assessment Data to Inform Instructional Decisions

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Northwestern/Ohio State

Abstract

Repeated studies have shown that teacher use of student achievement improves student learning. However, methods of reporting student achievement data seldom take instructional decision making into account. This research asked participants to make three separate instructional decisions and presented data three different ways for each decisions. Results indicated that teachers changed their decisions when the same data was presented with different visualizations, and other times did not change their decision when presented with additional information. The patterns of these changes revealed information about interpretation patterns for different visualization types.
