The Effects of a Multi-Component Intervention on Preschool Children’s Literacy Skills

Abstract

The purpose of this early efficacy study was to examine the effects of technology enhanced extended instruction (tier 2 intervention) utilizing DR prompts on children’s vocabulary, specifically, their verb learning.Participants made dramatic growth in their expressive vocabulary, increasing from an average of 1 known word at pretest to an average of 21 words at posttest. Additionally, participants’ knowledge of the definitions and relevant examples of the target words grew from an average of 5 at pretest to an average of 19 at posttest. Finally, in terms of generalization of knowledge, participants were able to recognize the target verbs depicted in Google images expressively and receptively with means of 3.45 and 3.92, respectively.
