Using qualitative data from a series of teacher interviews, this constructivist project aims to
create a definition of practical wisdom specific to educational contexts as a way to value teacher
voice and to understand the broader purposes of education. By analyzing teacher perspectives
on students’ moral development, teacher agency and empowerment, and accountability and standardization, the data shows a connection between teacher experience through practice and
their understanding of broader societal realities, such that practical wisdom can be defined as the
application of practice to purpose and vice versa. By working towards this definition, the project
hopefully lays the groundwork for an increase in the power of teachers’ voices and the overall
justice and equity of the educational system.
