This national quantitative study examined middle grades teachers (n=564) activities during common planning time (CPT) within and across states (n=7) from the national data set of the Common Planning Time Project of the MLER SIG. The study purpose was to examine how middle grades teachers spend CPT and whether differences existed among states in how teachers reported spending their CPT. Data analysis found that teachers in all states identified non-academic activities as their most frequent activities during CPT. Significant differences existed among states regarding curriculum and instructional related activities in addition to how teachers view the quality of time spent during CPT. Findings may provide insight into differences by state in what is valued and practiced during CPT.
