More Than Planting Trees: Transforming Youth and Their Community's Environment Through Critical Caring

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Swissotel, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne III

Abstract

This study explores the ways in which young people participate in the environment in relation to their high school environmental science curricular experiences in urban contexts. Within the classroom reported on within this manuscript, a high school teacher engaged in both caring for his students and caring for the environment alongside his students. I analyze ethnographic data using a theoretical construct of critical caring. Students in the study began to link their community’s survival and reconstruction to their own development and to environmental restoration.
