Teacher Education Reform: What Can We Learn From Innovative Educators?

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Hong Kong

Abstract

Prominent educators call for the reinvention of education and of teacher education. This study explored the practices of over 50 21st Century North American educators, who used innovative pedagogy and assessment methods while meeting accountability mandates. Participants were found through conferences, Websites, blogs, social media and word-of-mouth, Could their practices offer direction to teacher education reform? We use Fullan’s (2013) three-pronged framework as a conceptual lens: technology, the “new pedagogy” and teacher as change agent. Data sources included at least one interview per participant, Websites and blogs. Significantly, these educators offer legitimate and “living examples” (Whitehead, 2012) of accountable and innovative practices to teacher education students, while encouraging education faculty to reflect upon any needed changes in their own practices.
