Abstract

Research consistently reveals the benefits of teacher networks in supporting student and teacher outcomes, yet there is little formal inquiry into the nature of teacher network participation, broadly construed. This research is designed to better understand teacher network participation in order to support and develop opportunities for professional growth. We explore the networks of 183 Philadelphia teachers to understand the types of networks they participate in, the extent of participation, and value associated with participation. We find that teachers engage in a broad range of networks and explore teacher and school characteristics associated with variation. Further, results indicate that network value drives network behaviors. Additionally, the role of networks is important to school culture and exchanging instructional resources and practices.
