This qualitative case study uses a Black Feminist framework that centers on how an African American woman social studies teacher draws on her multiple identities coupled with personal and community knowledge to conceptualize and teach the construct of citizenship. Instead of conveying traditional notions of citizenship that values individualism, she understood her role as a social studies teacher to instill in students the importance of community. This study hopes to shed light on how alternative notions of citizenship may be presented and utilized in social studies classrooms.
