This paper outlines the successes and disappointments of a novice researcher as they conducted their first research study using mixed methodology. Studying Interactive Video Vignettes, the author embarked on a pilot study to explore how students used these videos to further their learning. The author found the initial sequential explanatory mixed method design to be inadequate due to constraints placed on the collection of the data. This necessitated a change in the planned data analysis. The author did not receive adequate qualitative data to draw appropriate conclusions. During this pilot study, the author learned better data collection techniques and explored options of a more feasible future research design. Implications for mentors of new researchers will be discussed.
