This study examined the positive effects on self-perception that result from engagement with the visual arts—the so-called "museum effect." The aesthetic choice paradigm was used to simulate museum art viewing within a laboratory setting. Results provide evidence that the physical context of a museum may be a necessary condition for the museum effect. The perspective taken is in accordance with the recent view that arts in education, and art experiences in general, provide outcomes beyond those that may result from traditional instruction. The results underscore the need for the museum to become an extension of the classroom.
