This is a study in progress. Students using complex curricula involving group work and distributed inferences are often aided in group formation, member interaction, and overall completion of tasks by scripts embedded within the curricula (Dillenbourg, 2002). In this study, we will utilize the time-stamped log-file data generated by students working in groups inside of a multi-user virtual environment. The data will be analyzed using an Individual Growth Modeling framework (Singer & Willett, 2003) to determine if students in an unscripted scenario of the environment demonstrate more authentic scientific inquiry skills than their peers in the scripted scenario.
