Uncompromising Success of the Greene Scholars: A Program for African American Students in STEM

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, St. Gallen 1

Abstract

Research reports that African Americans hold less than 2% of Ph.D. positions as scientists in STEM (Mutegi, 2013). Research has proven that if students are not interested in STEM before high school, it is an indication that they will not pursue or be successful in STEM-related experiences (Sadler, Sonnert, Hazari, and Tai 2012). Cannady, Greenwald, & Harris (2014) suggest that pathways to STEM careers do not happen in a vacuum, therefore programs beyond traditional schooling must be considered. The objective of this project is to examine the effectiveness the Greene Scholars Program (GSP) in supporting STEM education.
