Abstract

Working during academic semesters (i.e. term-time working) is getting increasingly popular among college students in China since the massification of Chinese higher education started in 1999. However very few studies in China have examined college students’ term-time working behavior with national data and quantitative research methods. This study employs a comprehensive dataset to examine factors that influence students’ term-time working decision in four-year colleges in China. Overall, it finds that college students’ decision on whether and how much to work during term time is influenced by their ability, financial need, and the institution they attend.
