Emergent Literacy Experiences of Young Latino English Learners

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Green Level, Crystal BC

Abstract

The study explored the home environment literacy practices of young Latino English Learners and their families. Participants were 217 incoming Kindergarten Latino EL students and parents. The parents completed a HLEQ, children were administered the PPVT, the preLAS, the PALS-K screening, the Woodcock Reading Mastery assessment, and the Wide Range Achievement test. The literacy assessments given to the children provided the researchers with comprehensive look at their literacy knowledge base. The results indicate that there were two significant paths for student achievement: availability of books and child initiated literacy factors was directly related to phonological processing for students. The findings of the study suggest that Latino parents are providing early literacy experiences that educators need to see as an asset.
