Deaf students have historically faced significant challenges in academic achievement, with findings of the Stanford Achievement Test consistently documenting an achievement gap between these learners and their hearing peers with and without disabilities. Summer skill regression, a phenomenon well documented in the literature for hearing students, may be a factor contributing to the achievement levels evidenced by deaf students. The purpose of this study is to investigate factors associated with summer skill regression/recoupment in the areas of reading and mathematics among 80 elementary through high school age deaf students over a two-year period. The ways in which the findings of this study can be used to inform policy and practice for other struggling learners with disabilities will also be explored.
