Improving Selection and Organization Skills to Write a Synthesis: An Intervention Program

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Written synthesis is a powerful hybrid task for knowledge construction. However, students often have difficulties selecting relevant information from the sources, and organizing and connecting it to create their own text. A 14-session intervention program aimed at improving students’ ability to select, connect and organize relevant information from two complementary historical texts was design and implemented. We used a quasi-experimental pre-post design with 2nd-grade secondary education students from two classrooms in the same school (control condition: n = 16; experimental condition: n = 13). The results indicated a great effect of the intervention on the texts produced by students in the experimental group in terms of selection, connection and organization of the information from the sources.
