Efforts to improve the academic performance of US Latino/a students have been hampered by their underrepresentation in studies of education. This is due, in part, to a combination of linguistic, economic, social and cultural barriers to their participation. The objective of the paper is to share our successes and challenges in recruitment and data collection with immigrant Latino mothers and their children as part of a longitudinal study of math achievement. We originally aimed to recruit and survey 300 mother-child pairs; we gathered 264 signed consent forms and surveyed 179 mother-child pairs. In addition to sharing our challenges and successes, we hope to generate a dialog on ethics, culture, and context in order to identify additional strategies and challenges.
