An Immigrant Mother's Experience: "Para que miren las maestras que uno mira por sus hijos"

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

This paper draws on a larger collective qualitative case study conducted in the course of three years. The larger study proposed to develop a deeper understanding of how low-income Spanish-speaking immigrant mothers in semi-rural areas of the southwestern borderland region of the United States negotiate their early interactions with their children’s schools and develop resources and strategies along the way. In particular, this paper focuses on one of the seven participants in the study and, specifically, on how her interactions with the schools her three daughters attended embody the values of motherwork.
