Music Teacher Educator Perspectives on Social Justice

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre Second Level, St. Gallen 2

Abstract

Social justice in pk-12 classrooms has become a more prevalent research topic in music education and music teacher education. Diversity represented in public schools encompasses but is not limited to socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, country of origin, language, gender, sexuality, and religion. However, few music teacher education researchers have attempted to ascertain the prevalence or nature of social justice education in music teacher preparation, or the extent to which social justice is valued or understood by teacher educators. This survey of music teacher educators describes the perspectives of music teacher educators with regard to social justice and music education. Understanding these perspectives will help researchers, teacher educators, and music teachers improve their practices to better serve diverse populations of students.
