Achievement Goal Orientations in Cooperative Classroom Contexts: Predicting Student Enjoyment, Community, and Group Processing

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

In achievement goal orientation theory, students pursue different goals while engaging in academic tasks. These goals are traditionally assessed at the individual learner level. This study investigated achievement goal orientations in the group-work context of classroom activities across a semester. Achievement goal orientations were measured at the level of individual learner, the individual working within a group, and the group of individuals working together. Positive group learning outcomes were predicted not only by individual goal orientations but also by group goal orientations, implying different roles for achievement goal orientations in different contexts and suggesting that students’ perception of their group’s goals is key to predicting group learning outcomes.
