Leaks in the Pipeline: Differences in College-Aspiring Students' Execution of Critical Precollege Actions by Race/Ethnicity, Gender, and Social Class

Abstract

Using data from the sophomore cohort of the Educational Longitudinal Study (2002), this paper examines racial/ethnic, gender, and social class differences in the completion of pre-college actions and the likelihood of attending a 4-year institution when these actions are completed in the proper sequence. Results show that despite consistent aspirations throughout high school to attend a 4-year post secondary institution after graduation, Black and Hispanic youth continue to lag in their abilities to fulfill those aspirations since they are the least likely to perform critical precollege actions in the proper sequence or at all.
