Grounded in stasis theory as a problem-solving strategy for constructing arguments, this case study focused on the following research question: What are the effects of using the stases as a reading and writing problem-solving strategy for identifying and constructing arguments on six (6) seventh-grade writers’ argument papers? Using real-time data collection, the investigation focused on the study participants’ use of the stases to read and analyze argument text in order to write an argument paper. Results indicate that when compared to baseline, participants scored higher on dimensions of development and voice, but at almost the same level on the dimension of conventions. Implications and methodological issues are considered.
