A Dream Attained or Deferred? An Examination of the Production and Placement of Latino Administrators

Abstract

The Latino student population is expanding rapidly, presenting incredible opportunities for U.S society and schools to learn from the perspectives, skills, and talents that students of Latino heritage offer. Many educators know that racial and ethnic diversity in schools promotes a rich student-learning environment. This paper examines Latino student access to Latino teachers and school leaders (assistant principals and principals). We also investigate the transition from teacher to assistant principal (AP) or principal, and the transition of teachers and leaders from AP to principal across racial/ethnic background. We use multiple Texas administrative data sets to show the production and employment status in schools of individuals who obtain school leader certification from 1990 through 2008.
