Exploring a Novice Supervisor's Role in Early Childhood Field Supervision

Thu, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside East

Abstract

This paper examines the experiences of a novice university supervisor engaged in the supervision of Early Childhood Pre-service Teachers. Using self-study, the varying roles used by a novice supervisor in early childhood education were explored. As supervisory experiences unfolded over the course of a semester, reflective journal entries and conferencing notes were collected and analyzed to determine which roles were used in varying situations that arose in field placement. Roles included an unpacker, mediator, facilitator, coach and cheerleader. These diverse roles signify the complexity of field supervision and the need to prepare novice teacher educators for the position of university supervisor.
