Looking at educational policy patterns within the United States as a broader context for our work as teacher educators, we examined our individual practice to critically “read” our teaching in light of the Common Core State Standards for visual literacy. Through self-study three researchers asked the question: “How do we use visual literacy to re-see our practices and to construct meaning through the application of educational policy?” In this paper we present the research process, share what we came to understand, and discuss broader implications regarding educational policy.
