Examining "Diversity Pedagogies": Disability Studies in Education and Curriculum Theory

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Disability Studies in Education advance an ideal often premised on the potential for schools to practice inclusivity. The theories and works associated with the field of Curriculum Studies are instructive toward articulating a pedagogical perspective that is consonant with DSE. I employ Dis/ability Critical Race Studies (DisCrit) to sketch an intertwining conceptual perspective of curriculum and instruction in special education, inclusive education, multicultural and social justice approaches to education in order to “unpack” pedagogical practices conceived to address diversity. I draw from Curriculum Studies to examine assumptions underlying struggles often characterized as gaining access to general education. Universal design in education, differentiated instruction, culturally responsive teaching, multicultural, and social justice education are specifically attended to.
