How Home–School Relationships Affect Teachers: Evaluating the Use of Home Visits

Sun, April 19, 8:15 to 9:45am, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

This study examined the relationship of schools’ implementation of home visits, as part of a more comprehensive family engagement project, to teachers’ beliefs. In doing so, the study investigates a little studied question, how do school-family relationships affect teachers. Data were collected from 213 teachers working in schools implementing a family engagement program during the 2012-2013 school year. The analyses found that those in organizations with greater support for family engagement tended to feel more efficacious, have greater job satisfaction, and had better relationships with their students’ families. The findings have implications for research on how family engagement efforts affect teachers.
