Evaluating a Scaffolding Design to Automatically Support Students' Data Interpretation Within a Simulation-Based Inquiry Environment

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Effective scaffolding can support productive and successful inquiry practices, which can contribute to deeper content learning. In this work, we developed and pilot tested scaffolds designed to be embedded within SYSTEM, an intelligent tutoring system for science, to help hone in real time students' inquiry skills related to data interpretation. These scaffolds assist students who need support with the procedural skills of data interpretation, such as choosing controlled trials to warrant claims and making valid claims based on collected data, as well as students who engage in confirmation bias. Results of the pilot study showed that all participants required at least one scaffold during data interpretation and students were more likely to need less scaffolding support on a second activity.
