The Academic Achievement of Veteran Students in Public Two-Year Colleges

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The study compares veteran students with their civilian peers in grade point average (GPA) and probability of graduation between fiscal year 2010 (FY10) and 2013 (FY13). Transcript and administrative data from 9451 program students enrolled in a public two-year college in a Midwestern state were analyzed. Results from growth curve modeling and logistic regression showed that veteran and civilian students’ GPA at FY10 and its growth are associated with gender and math proficiency. Veteran students in manufacturing programs have slower growth rate. Veteran students also tend to have higher graduation probability than civilian students when other variables are controlled. The findings underscore the predictive power of academic preparation in math on two-year college students’ academic achievement.
