This research focuses on STEM career interest and achievement of elementary and middle school students, with data gathered over two years. The study analyzes the persistence of STEM interest and how it relates to academic achievement and academic growth, as well as gender differences in these relationships. Results show there are differences in achievement at different levels of STEM interest and interest persistence, and that there is a moderating gender effect. The study shows differing interest levels and persistence of interest for STEM between males and females, and that there are greater gender differences in achievement when students have a clear and consistent opinion about STEM over the two-year period.
