Power, Privilege, and Spirit: Christian Black Women Faculty Attitudes, Implications for Institutional Diversity

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Hong Kong

Abstract

This article examines the perceptions and attitudes of Christian Black women faculty in regards to religious difference at both historically Black colleges and universities [HBCUs] and predominantly White institutions [PWIs]. By taking a focused look at uncomplicated Christian privilege at HBCUs, the study asks, “While offering Christian Black women faculty an uncommon space of cultural congruency and empowerment, what are the conditions in place at HBCUs that may also support a privilege system that silences different religiously-identified students?” Implications in regards to diversity at HBCUs follow this examination.
