Using Narrative Inquiry to Investigate the Challenges to Retain African American and Latino(a) Males In Technical Skills Careers and STEM: A Non-Cognitive and Anti Deficit Thinking Model Approach

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Hong Kong

Abstract

African American males who seek better opportunities in the labor force through Career and Technical Education (CTE) educational opportunities must find ways to persist beyond the current education environment to seize career opportunities that will improve their post-graduation prospects. Additionally, secondary and post-secondary institutions must continue to provide the types of opportunities that lead students on the path to long-term educational and employment success (Brown, Bartee, & Hamilton, 2007; Flores, 2011; Palmer, Davis, Moore, & Hilton, 2010). Education challenges, combined with socioeconomic (SES) challenges, are often a one-two knock-out punch for minorities, acting to severely curtail if not completely prevent prospects of long-term employment success in CTE careers (Harper, Patton & Wooden, 2009).
